Bi-Metallic Cable Lugs

A bi-metallic cable lug is a wire connector made up of copper and aluminium, to terminate aluminium cable to copper contacts on items like busbars, switchgear and transformers.

Bi-metallic lugs have an aluminium body with a copper ring and to prevent the chemical reaction that would normally happen between copper and aluminium, which would cause galvanic corrosion and high electrical resistance, bi-metallic cable lugs go through a process called 'friction welding', which causes the materials on the lug to bond.

Bi-metallic cable lugs are used by utility companies for power distribution systems, as well as by solar and renewable energy engineers, who are connecting aluminum PV wire to copper busbars.
