VDE Insulated Extension Bars
A VDE extension bar is also known as an 'insulated extension bar' and is a hand tool which is insulated against electrical currents. It is placed between an insulated socket and an insulated square drive hand tool, such as a ratchet or torque wrench to extend the operators reach, whilst helping to protect them when working on equipment that has an electrical current of up to 1000 volts running through it.
VDE extension bars have two coatings on them, an outer layer (red or orange), which shows that the tool is fully insulated. If damaged it will then show the colour of the inner layer (yellow), highlighting to the operator that the tool is not fully insulated against electrical currents.
Insulated extension bars are used by mechanics who may be working on hybrid or electric cars, electricians, DIYers and anyone else working on hard to reach fasteners that may have a live electric current running through them.
