Ratchets

A ratchet can also be known as a 'ratcheting socket wrench' and has a built-in mechanism that enables the operator to turn the tool quickly in one direction, whilst rotating freely in the other direction. This ratcheting mechanism enables the operator to tighten/untighten bolts and fasteners (usually with the aid of a socket) quicker than if they were using a spanner or Allen key, because there is no need to remove the tool from the fastener.

Ratchets are widely used by mechanics, electricians and engineers but they are also commonly found in many DIYers tool bags.
