Step Drill Bits
A step drill bit is also known as a 'cone drill bit' and has a series of stepped cutting edges, with each step increasing in diameter. Instead of using several separate drill bits to create different hole sizes, one step drill bit can drill or enlarge holes to multiple diameters.
Step drill bits are most commonly used on thin sheet materials, including sheet metal, aluminium, plastic, acrylic and some thin timber or laminate materials, depending on the bit design, for tasks such as drilling clean holes in electrical panels, trunking, enclosures, ducting, metal boxes and fabricated components.
Each step on the bit corresponds to a different hole size, so as the bit passes further through the material, the hole becomes larger. Step drill bits are popular with joiners, electricians, aerospace engineers, HVAC engineers and plumbers who want to drill clean holes with minimal burrs.
