Safe-T-Cable Tools

A Safe-T-Cable tool is a specialised hand or power tool, that is designed to make it quick and easy for the operator to apply Safe-T-Cable to bolts at the correct tension. In addition it will also crimp the ferrule and cut any excess cable.

Safe-T-Cable is a pre-engineered, multi-strand locking cable system that is used to secure fasteners in critical applications, such as in the aerospace, motorsports, defence and marine sectors, and Safe-T-Cable tools ensure that is it installed according to many different standards, including military specified standards.

Safe-T-Cable tools ensure that Safe-T-Cable is installed to pre-set tension based on the cable diameter, ensuring consistent and repeatable results, whilst reducing the variability associated with hand-twisted safety wire.

Frequently Asked Questions About Safe-T-Cable Tools

What maintenance is required for Safe-T-Cable tools?

Safe-T-Cable tools are fairly low maintenance, but there are steps that need to be taken to ensure the tool can provide consistent performance, proper tensioning and long service life.

  • The crimp cavity can accumulate debris during use, which can cause the ferrule to stick if it is not clean. Debris can be removed be brushing or scraping the cavity and it should then be oiled.
  • After use, the tool should always be wiped down to remove any debris, metal shavings, dust or contaminants. This is especially important if the tool has been used in any corrosive environments.
  • Apply a light machine oil to pivot points, tensioning mechanisms and cutting components at regular intervals.
  • Use a verification block to ensure the tool is still within the required tensioning tolerances.
  • Ensure the tool is always stored in a dry and clean environment.

What is the difference between rotary and non-rotary Safe-T-Cable tools?

The SCTR series tools (rotary) have an adjustable tension, which when applying tension to Safe-T-Cable meets the flex limits of AS4536 standard

The SCT series tools (non-rotary) apply a pre-set tension to Safe-T-Cable, and the operator will need to action multiple actuations to the handle of the tool to get to the correct tension, which then meets the flex limits of AS4536 standard.

How is tension controlled during Safe-T-Cable installation?

Tension is controlled by the tool’s built-in mechanism, which ensures consistent and accurate tension before crimping. This removes the need for the operator to 'feel' that they are executing the correct tension, with adjustable tools generating a clicking sound from the rotary tension mechanism to indictate the clutch has slipped, and preset tools adjusting to crimp/cut mode when the desired tension has been reached.

Are noses interchangeable between tools?

Yes, noses can be interchanged between different tools for the same cable size, whether that is manual, hydraulic, pneumatic or cordless.

Can one tool handle multiple cable diameters?

No it cannot. Safe-T-Cable installation tools are size-specific and calibrated for a particular cable diameter, such as .022”/0.56mm, .032”/0.81mm, .040”/1.02mm and .062”/1.57mm. Each diameter requires a specific tension load and because of this, the internal tensioning mechanism and crimping components are engineered for that exact size.
