Impact Wrench Anvils

An impact wrench anvil is the square drive output shaft on an impact wrench that the socket attaches to and is used to transfer the tool’s rotational force and hammering impact action into the socket, allowing the operator to tighten or loosen nuts, bolts and other fasteners.

Some impact wrenches have replaceable anvils, with smaller drive sizes commonly being used for lighter assembly, maintenance and automotive tasks, while larger drive sizes are used for heavy-duty industrial, construction, agricultural or commercial vehicle applications.

Impact wrench anvils commonly have two different socket retention styles. A friction ring, also known as a hog ring, allows sockets to be changed quickly and is useful when sockets need to be swapped often. The other style is a pin detent, which holds the socket more securely, making it useful when working at height or where socket retention is especially important.
