A strap wrench is a hand tool that is a flexible strap normally made from rubber or nylon. It is designed to apply a uniform grip around the outer edge of smooth objects, such as connectors, fasteners and pipes, as well as irregular shapes where a standard spanner would slip.
Strap wrenches avoid the standard pressure points or metal-to-metal contact that are created from a standard spanners, and instead use static friction to provide grip to turn an object.
Strap wrenches are used widely by plumbers for gripping and turning pipes, as well as by mechanics when working on turning oil filters and other cyclindrical parts on a car.
