If you're an avid DIYer, a torque wrench is a must-have tool. For convenience, you can acquire a torque wrench set. It will work out cheaper than buying each component individually.

But what does a torque wrench set consist of? Find out the 5 main components by reading this blog!

What Is A Torque Wrench Set?

A torque wrench is used by mechanics, engineers, plumbers, agriculturists, and many other professionals. The tool measures the tension of a fastener, such as a nut or a bolt, and applies a specific amount of torque.

Applying specific tension to fasteners helps ensure that it does not come loose due to under-tightening or does not break or damage equipment due to over-tightening.

You will require several components to use a torque wrench for various tasks and on different-sized fasteners. A torque wrench set consists of these components, making it much easier for you to complete the job.

If you acquire a set, your torque wrench and accessories will come in a protective case to store your tools safely.

So, what will you find in your torque wrench set? Below are some examples of accessories that most torque wrench sets consist of.

Please note that the accessories included in different wrench kits will vary.

1) Setting Key

First, you may find a setting key, aka a torque adjustment key.

This tool enables you to adjust your torque wrench setting.

The inner key is T-shaped and usually wrapped in a vinyl cushion. This is the adjustment key. The outer key is L-shaped, which is the locking key.

Rotating the setting key clockwise when engaged with the adjustment nut will increase the torque setting.

You can decrease the torque setting by rotating it counter-clockwise when engaged with the torque adjustment nut.

2) Extension bars

Extension bar

An extension bar, also known as a torque stick, is handy if you need to apply more torque to a fastener.

Some torque wrench sets include extension bars, usually in various sizes, such as 75 mm and 300 mm.

The thicker the extension bar is, the higher the torque level you can apply to the fastener.

Using an extension bar will also enhance your reach, enabling you to tighten/loosen nuts and bolts in confined spaces.

3) Flat Head Bit

Slotted bit

When you have a fastener that has a straight, linear groove in its head, you will need a flat head bit to tighten or loosen it.

Many torque wrench sets will come with this valuable component, potentially in various flat head bit sizes, such as 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm.

Flat head fasteners are popular since they are for general fastening. They are prevalent because, once fastened, they sit flush against the surface.

To use the flat head bit, attach it to the top of your torque wrench.

4) Torx Bit

Similar to flat head fasteners, Torx head fasteners are commonly used, particularly in construction and masonry. So, more often than not, a torque wrench set will include Torx bits of varying sizes.

Torx fasteners are easily recognisable because they are star-shaped. This 6-lobed design allows you to apply a high torque level because you have increased surface area contact.

Due to the level of surface contact that you have on a Torx fastener, you will not have to apply as much pressure when tightening or loosening it, so you can work quickly and achieve more reliable results.

A Torx fastener’s six-pointed design also helps to reduce the likelihood of slipping and damage occurring to the fastener or surface you are working on.

5) Hex Bit

Another type of bit found in a torque wrench set is a hex bit

You will need a hex bit to tighten or loosen hex fasteners commonly found in construction environments.

Hex fasteners have a hexagonal-shaped head. They are often used to attach wood to wood or metal to wood.

Hex bits are best for industrial equipment, machinery, or heavy timber due to their sturdy design and versatility.
