Ratchet Spanners

A ratchet spanner is a hand tool that is also known as a 'ratcheting spanner' or 'ratchet wrench' and has a ratchet mechanism in a multi-toothed head that is designed to turn a fastener in one direction but not in the opposite direction. This enables the operator to not need to remove the ratchet spanner from the fastener meaning that a fastener can be tightened or loosened with just one hand. The simplicity of the mechanism means that with a flick of the switch next to the head or by turning the spanner around, the fastener can then be turned in the opposite direction.

Ratchet spanners can have a ratchet ring on each end with differing sizes, or they can have an open-end and a ratchet end to provide more versatility when working on fasteners.

Ratchet spanners are used on bolts for small machine repair, on items like lawn mowers and washing machines, but can also be used for bigger jobs, such as removing bolts from car engines.
