Screwdriver Bits

A screwdriver bit is an interchangeable metal end that fits into a ratchet screwdriver, electric screwdriver or drill and is used for tightening or loosening the appropriate fastener head type, such as Phillips, flat-head/slotted, Torx or Pozidriv screws.

Screwdriver bits are used widely by many trades people, including mechanics, joiners, carpenters and electricians, as well as DIYers for many jobs around the home, such as hanging shelves or putting together flat-pack furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Screwdriver Bits

What is the purpose of different lengths of screwdriver bits?

Screwdriver bits come in varying lengths to provide better reach or precision. Longer bits are ideal for accessing screws in deep or tight spaces, while shorter bits offer better control and stability.

How do I know if a bit is compatible with my power tool?

Check the shank type (normally square or hex) and size. Most bits have a 1/4" hex shank, which fits many standard drill chucks and bit holders, although bit and shank sizes can range from 5/32" to 7/16".

Can impact-rated bits be used with regular drills?

Yes, impact-rated bits can be used with standard drills. Impact bits are made from more durable metal than standard screwdriver bits, so that they don't shard or snap from the higher torque created by impact drivers.

What is the difference between standard and security Torx bits?

Standard Torx bits have a simple six-point star shape, whilst security Torx bits have a pin in the centre of the star shape. This means that security Torx bits can fasten/unfasten security Torx screws, because the pin on the bit matches with a hole in the security Torx screw, which a standard Torx bit does not have and would therefore not be able to turn the screw. When shopping for security Torx screwdriver bits, look for bits that have 'TR' in their size reference, as this stands for 'tamper-resistant'.

Why do some screwdriver bits have colour-coded bands?

Colour-coded bands help quickly identify bit types and sizes, improving efficiency on tasks that involve switching between different screws.

How do I prevent screwdriver bits from stripping screws?

Ensure the screwdriver bit matches the screw head perfectly and apply steady, even pressure while turning. Do not try and force the screwdriver bit to turn screws where it doesn't fit correctly, as this will damage the bit and potentially round-off the screwdriver head, making it difficult to remove the screw without additional tools.

Can screwdriver bits be used for both manual and powered screwdrivers?

Yes, screwdriver bits are compatible with hand operated screwdrivers like ratchet screwdrivers and also power tools, like drills and electric screwdrivers, provided they fit the chuck or bit holder. If the operator is using an impact driver though, we would recommend using impact-rated screwdriver bits, because regular screwdriver bits won't be able to handle the torque and hammering motion of an impact driver.

Do screwdriver bits wear out over time?

Yes, frequent use or using excessive torque can dull or round off the tips. We would always recommend replacing worn screwdriver bits to maintain their efficiency and also protect screw heads from getting damaged.
