Hole Punches

A hole punch can also be known as a 'knockout punch' and is used in conjunction with a hydraulic punch tool. This tool set is designed to make it quick and easy to create a hole in sheet steel with a burr free finish.

Widely used by panel builders and sheet metal workers, hole punches are designed to cut different shapes through various alloy thickness'.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hole Punches

Can you use Slug Busters on stainless steel?

No. Slug Buster punches are only designed for use on mild steel sheets up to 3.5mm thick. If you want to punch stainless steel, please see the range of Slug Splitters, which can handle stainless sheet up to 3.5mm thick. The Slug Splitter range is a stronger/ heavy duty punch, which has upgraded draw studs to handle the increased punching force.

When drilling the pilot hole for a draw stud, what size hole should you drill first?

It’s always best to size the pilot hole as close to the draw stud diameter as you can, to help with alignment. If you’re using a 19mm draw stud, then a 20mm pilot hole is best, 9.5mm draw stud then a 10mm pilot hole, and if you’re using the stainless 11.1mm draw stud then a 12mm pilot hole is perfect.

Can I use the Stainless steel punches manually, without a hydraulic pulling tool?

No, because the forces involved with punching stainless steel are very high, a hydraulic punch tool is always required.

Can I just replace the punch as it wears?

Yes you can, although it is recommended to change both the punch and die, because the die will also wear at a similar rate. If you see a burr starting to form on your finished holes, then changing both punch and die is recommended.
