Knives and Blades

Knives are precision hand tools used across all trades, for a wide range of tasks, such as cutting through various materials, like cable, sheaths, vinyl flooring, carpet and insulation, stripping wire, scoring drywall and opening boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Knives & Blades

How often should I replace or sharpen my knife?

If you notice a decline in the cutting capability of your knife or if the knife is dragging through the material it is cutting, then it is probably time to sharpen it. Some knives have replaceable blades, which is a feature of many utility knives and it is often quicker and more efficient to replace the blade, rather than try and sharpen it. The frequency you use your knife, as well as what you are cutting, will determine how long it will stay sharp for.

How do you cut straight lines in sheet materials with just a knife?

To cut a starightline with a knife you will need a straight edge, like a ruler or metal bar. Place the straight edge where you require the straight line, and score down it with the knife, ensuring that the blade is always pressed against the straight edge. For harder materials, you may need to do this a few times before the blade cuts fully through the material.

How to avoid damaging cables when stripping insulation with a knife?

If you are going to use a knife for this job then we would recommend a utility knife or a cable knife, and ensure that the blade is sharp. Take gradual, small nicks out of the end of the cable sheath, ensuring not to nick the conductor. We would always recommend using a wire stripper when stripping wire insulation though, because wire strippers are purpose built for this job, are far less likely to nick the conductor and will strip the insulation far quicker.

How many spare blades should you keep on hand for a day’s work?

If you are using a knife that has a replaceable blade, like a utility knife, then we would recommend always keeping a spare blade. Many utility knives have a space in them for spare blades, but if yours doesn't, then ensure you keep one safe in your tool box, away from anything that could blunt it or that it could cut through and damage.

How do tradespeople stop blades from rusting?

The best way to look after the blade on your knife is to keep it clean and always dry it with a cloth after use. In addition, you should apply a coating of oil or wax and store it in a dry place that has low humidity.

Do knives need regular cleaning if used on materials like adhesive tape?

Yes. The sticky residue from adhesive tape will lead to dirt and moisture sticking to the blade if it isn't cleaned off. If not cleaned, the dirt will blunt the blade and the moisture will rust it, drastically reducing the lifespan of your knife. Clean the blade with a dry cloth after use and store it in a dry place that has low humidity.
